Cactus Applique

I just picked up my African Mermaid embroidery project and have been working on edging it with a Goodwill tie.

My workspace reflects the way my brain works--chaotically. I have all our little embroideries the kids and I did in the fall. I need to finish up the skeleton and then we'll sew it into a wallhanging. I worked on embroidery all day and Sam worked on his with me. He's doing an embroidery of vampire teeth and bats. I'm amazed he is so diligent about it. He's very focused and has very definite taste about what he wants to do. He does not take constructive criticism very well, I might add. But nor do I.

I saw a little picture of a cactus applique and it got me all excited to do some applique. I haven't sewn in ages because I've been doing other things and been busy at work, but the mood came over me and it could not be denied.

I had originally thought to put it on a patterned background--light blue--but it seemed to busy to me. I wasn't sure how I could make it work. So I settled on a muslin background.

I cut the shapes, turned under the edges and then pinned them in place. I handstitched them to the muslin background and then embroidered on top of that. I dropped off my sewing machine to be serviced, so I could only handsew. My machine won't be ready for 10 days.

I tried on different backgrounds and borders to see which I like. Taking pictures lets me compare them side by side. Sometimes what I think is wonderful really isn't and it often shows up in the pictures.
