The Luxurious Growth of Summer

Everything gets ridiculously verdant during the summer. Words like rampant and voracious come to mind. This is an arrow plant I pilfered when it was a babe from a local pond. It produced a lot of seeds. I think I may have a pond full of them next year.
My lilies were attacked by the nasty little red lily leaf eater. It makes a fecal shield from it's own excrement and is pretty disgusting as far as insects go. I won't spray. I spent a goodly amount of time attempting to eradicate the little bugger with scissors and a bowl of soapy water. Unfortunately, it didn't do much good. It doesn't have many predators other than me so I may have to say goodbye to my lilies. The little pest does have a lovely fresh blood red color, though.

I have to saythat this year I finally achieved the soil I had been eagerly waiting for. It must have been a combination of all the wood chips and mulch I put down and the rain. Whatever the reason, I got soil like coffee grounds in all my garden beds. The earthworms were churning and chortling away all summer. It is several inches deep. I'm going to pile on more mulch this fall so they have something to keep them occupied over the winter.l

My stone lion is getting mossy. I don't care if he sleeps on the job as long as he gets old looking.

Water lettuce in the front pond in October. A lovely little, delicate plant that won't survive the winter up here.
